Re: 1.9 TDI Difference. by dazza » Mon Oct 19, 2009 1:00 pm. The TDI you speak of should be the 74Kw, 240NM version. Differences between yours and a S/L are: 74KW/240Nm as apposed to 96Kw/310Nm on the S/L. VNT15 series turbo vs VNT17 on the S/L which is bigger. Brakes are different with the S/L having bigger disks.

The 1.6 has 18% taller gearing than the 1.9 and this makes the pd unit feel much stronger in gear. The pd unit has stronger bottom end pull anyway and the shorter gearing really gives the car a different feel.

. When the first 2003 TDI engine appeared in 2.0, it began to slowly pull off the 1.9 TDI engine. Unfortunately, the new diesel proved to be more unreliable. So, if there is a choice between a 1.9 TDI and a 2.0 TDI engine, choose an older engine, although it provides slightly worse performance, and certainly a better choice of a 130-horsepower 1.

Drives very much nicer and quicker than the 1.9 TDi but at a cost of more VED and MPG, was put off of the late 1.9 TDi BXE due to the reliability issues. Once again thanks for the advice.
